Sometimes, a lie is the only weapon you need. And a perfectly crafted lie will give the subject the illusion that he/she is in total control of the situation; that every decision they make is done by them and not manipulated by you. Your primary goal is to transport them into a synthetic reality you've created without them ever knowing it.
I know this because I'm a fiction writer. I'm essentially a professional storyteller, a professional liar.
